What's your function? Ashley Maddox

Part a:

1. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/03/suicide-unemployment_n_5926056.html
2. Relationships are considered a function if each input has exactly one output. In other words, if it passes the vertical line test.
3.In the following graph, each line separately represents a function. The relationship between year and unemployment rate is one function and the relationship between year and suicide rate is another function.

suicide

4. In the years following 1991, the relationship shows that unemployment rate and suicide are directly related. As unemployment falls, suicide rate falls, and as unemployment rises, the suicide rate also rises.

5. The function is not a linear function.
6. The function is not linear because the average rate of change does not equal the rate of change between each data point. There is not a constant rate of change.
8. This function is not a mathematical model because unemployment rate is not directly linked or dependent on the input values, the years.

Part B
1. Relationships are not functions if there is more than one input for every output.
2.
3. This relationship means that as age increases, reaction time in seconds increasing, meaning the individual has a slower reaction time.
4.This relationship is not a function because for some of the inputs there are various outputs meaning that for each age, there are varying results of reaction time. For example, for age 21 there is an output at 1 second, 1.75 seconds, and 3 seconds.

  1. I really like your Part B graph! It took me so long to find something that wasn't a function, and I wish the one I found was as cool as yours. Also, the unemployment rate/suicide rate correlation is interesting and a really creative and kind of morbid topic to pick it's cool

  2. Wow this is pretty cool. Who knew that suicide rates really went up that high during higher unemployment rates. I guess it really just has to do with mental health too-- the more depressed an unemployed person is the bigger chance of suicide. I could see why the age would correlate to it though. The older you are, the higher the probability of you owning a family to support. Crazy info.

  3. ashley,

nice job on your first example. it kind of makes sense that people would get pretty depressed during times of unemployment. like emma rose said, morbid, but interesting.

your explanations are good, however, it would have been nice to see actual ROC calculations to confirm linearity in your explanation there. additionally, you forgot to use function notation when explaining the math model part, but other than that, good job.

your second example is great and well explained!

    prof little
