Blog Post #2



Part A

2) A function is a relationship in which there is exactly one output per input. It can be represented as a graph, table, and formula or in words.
3) The chart above shows Google’s annual revenue, in billions, starting in the year 2002 and ending in the year 2013.
4) In the chart above, the relationship between each year and the revenue for each year is a function because for every output (revenue amount) there is exactly one input (year).
5) This function is not a linear function.
6) This function is not a linear function so the answer to this question is irrelevant.
7) This function is not a linear function because if you were to graph the numbers given on a coordinate plane, the line created will not be straight. To visualize in your head how the line is not straight, put a dot on the graph above at the top of each blue bar, then draw a line connecting the dots and you will notice it is a curvy line, not straight. Also, when I calculated the constant rate of change I computed answers that were not the same for each interval, proving that the line is not straight and that it is curvy.
8) This function is not a mathematical model because the output (revenue) is not dependent on the input (year). If R=revenue and T=year, then if this was a mathematical model, the function notation would be: R=f(T).



Part B
1) A relationship is not a function when there is more than one output per input. Also, when the values are graphed, the line created will not pass the vertical line test.

3) The relationship in this graph is the input (TD, Int., Rate, Att., Comp., and Yds) and the output (year). In other words, for every year (output) there are multiple values for the TD, Int., Rate, Att., Comp., and Yds (input). 
4) This relationship is not a function because; on the graph there is more than one input (TD, Int., Rate, Att., Comp., and Yds) PER output, being each year. Each input results in multiple output values for that input. Simply there is more than one input per output. Whereas a function is defined as “a relationship that has exactly one output per input".

2.     Functions have an output for every input and passes the vertical line test.  The output has to be directly related to the input.
3.     The article has several relationships that represent a function. There is a graph on unemployment and wage growth and a graph on household debt.
4.     For the graph regarding household debt, there is an input for every output and it passes the vertical line test. For every input in the graph there is an output. For the percent of household debt, there is a corresponding year. Additionally, there is a relationship between the input and the outputs of the graphs.
5.     The function is not a linear function
6.     The function does not have a constant rate of change. At some points, the rate of change is positive and at some points it is negative which means it cannot be a linear function.
7.     If the function is not linear, explain in detail how you know it is not linear (be sure to refer to the average rate of change).
8.     A mathematical model is a function used to describe an actual situation. However this graph is not a mathematical model because the time does not determine the household debt, the input has no real impact on the output. For example, a function with the equation U=unemployment T=Time F(U)=T would not be a function of this graph. 


Part b:

     A relationship is not a function when it fails the vertical line test. Additionally, two numbers can be related and not be a function. The charts compare the statistics of several rookie quarterbacks in 2014. The charts compare the different pass completion percentage on different types of passes and when the quarterbacks face pressure. There is no real relationship between the statistics of each quarterbacl. There is also no output for every input in the graph. It would be impossible to just input pressure or blitz and generate an output. It is impossible to quantify the amount of blitz a quarterback faces which means the output cannot be completely dependent on the input. You would also need a quantifiable output for the distance of a throw instead of just the completion percentage of throws of a certain range.

A function is a relationship that has exactly one output for each input. In this case, the stock prices of Micron are a function of demand for the goods of the firm.

This function can be represented as f(s) = ds; where f(s) represents the stock price, s represents the amount of shares, and d represents the demand for shares by shareholders.

This function is not linear because the rate of change is not constant at every interval. The stock prices don’t have a constant rate of change due to the volatility of the factors that affect demand, such as the tastes of consumers, expectations of the future, or changes in the prices of related goods.  

The function is a mathematical model because output values are directly dependent on the input values. This means that if the demand for shares rises, the stock prices rise as well. If demand for shares fall, the stock prices will also fall. This implies that there is a positive relationship between demand and stock prices.

As a result of Colorado’s legalization of cannabis, many new businesses have come about to take advantage of the “green rush,” but are trying to put a new, appropriate spin on consumption to make it appear more acceptable for all, much like the early 1900’s marketing of cigarettes to women as an acceptable social action. 

This relationship is not a function because it there could be multiple outputs per input, and there is no definite way of quantifying the recent boom in cannabis advertising and “cannabusiness.”

Part a:
A function is any relationship where every input has exactly one output.  This means that every input value can have only one corresponding output value.  In the article, the function represented is the relationship between the month and the unemployment rate where the month is the input and the unemployment rate is the output.  According to this function, as time progresses, the unemployment rate decreases for 2014.  This function is not linear since the data does not form a straight line on the graph and there is not a uniform rate of change in the unemployment rate every month.  This function is also not a mathematical model since the months do not influence the unemployment rate.

A relationship is not a function if any input value has more than one output value.  The graph below shows the minimum wages of various countries.  This relationship is not a function since, if the wage is used as the input value and country are used as the output value, two countries have the same minimum wage.  More specifically, if $7.90 is the input, both Germany and Canada are the corresponding output values.  Therefor, the input of $7.90 has two outputs.

Part A

2) A function is a relationship that has one output per input. To be a function, on the graph the relationship must pass the vertical line test, meaning that there cannot be two of the same y- points on the graph in the same function.

 4) In this relationship there function between number of recoded Ebola cases and the date.
5) This function is not linear because the average rate of change isn't constant.
7) I know this function is not linear because the graph is not in a straight line and grows exponentially rather than linearly.
8) This function is a mathematical model because it has a real life application, which relates to the number of Ebola cases recorded and can potentially be recorded.

Part B

1) For a relationship to not be a function it will not pass the vertical line test nor have an average rate of change. Also a relationship that isn't a function will have more than one output per input.

2) The relationship here is a function of imports to exports per year.
3) I know that this is not a function because in multiple years there are the same output values in imports and exports. Especially in 2011 and 2012 when the imports and exports are exactly the same for those two years.

Part 1. Function
A function is a relationship in which there is exactly one output per input. A graph that shows a function must pass the vertical line test and cannot have two of the same y-values. This article has a graph that displays the relationship between age (25-75) and spending (overall and broken into categories). It shows that at the age of 25, spending is at its lowest, peaks in your early 50s, and falls again by the time you reach 75. It is not a linear function because there is no average rate of change, and it is not a straight line. Instead, the graph rises and falls and has constant average rate of change. It is not a mathematical model because spending does not depend solely on age.






Part 2. Not a Function
A function is a relationship in which there is exactly one output per input. A graph that shows a function must pass the vertical line test and must have no vertical lines. I found an article that provides the most and least lucrative college majors. The article contains a horizontal bar graph that shows the relationship between choice in college major and its corresponding median income. If the major is viewed as the output and the median income viewed as the input, then this relationship does not represent a function because many majors share the same median income (ex. petroleum engineering and health and medical prep programs both come in at $120,000), meaning the graph would create vertical lines, and therefor would not pass the vertical line test, and therefor would not be a function.
